One of the toughest things about being in the rat race is pointless of tasks you need to complete. You work hard everyday, and your only reward is a paycheck. You end up in a situation when you dislike your work. This happens all the time when you work for money. Turn this around. Make money works for you
If you answered “yes” to these questions, it means that you like your job and it is suitable for you. Being in rat race don’t bothers you and you are happy.
Unfortunately, most of us don’t feel this way. After some time in the office, we feel burned out. We want to work well, but our boss wants us to finish everything today. He also – in the same time – gives you another “easy” things to do. I really hate that. This “easy” tasks often requires couple of days to complete, and you start to be overwhelmed by work. When you are trying to speak with your boss he gives you advice: “do this today or your fired”. If you felt this before, it mean that you are in the rat race.
“The rat race” is a term used for a pointless pursuit for someone’s else goals. You can image a rat runing in a wheel (and don’t move forward at all), or a lab rat trying to escape a maze. You can think that your goal is to complete all tasks provided to you by your boss. That’s the reason you make money. So you are running inside a maze and when you got our (complete task), you get a reward (money). This is going over and over, day by day. You don’t have a choice. Your boss will always give you another, more complicated task and expect quick finish. First of all you lose a choice, and where is time to achieve your goals?
How to know if you are in rat race?
1. You have no time to think about your tasks, and To-Do list enlarges every day.
To be succesfull at work you need to pepare good Daily To-Do List (please read “Time Management” by Brian Tracy). This is important, but… When you stuck in rat race you list can be sometimes worthless. As an employee you need to listen to your boss. He often gives you urgent tasks (don’t included in your list). When you are overwhelmed with work you can’t predict everything. When you need to do something more your plan will change. I’ve experienced this problem myself. I was making to-do list everyday. After couple of hours of working the phone rang with something urgent. Then I needed to stop everything and do another task. Of course all of my plans were not executed. Then after couple of days my “big boss” was unhappy for my performance.
2. You have multiple bosses.
If the business is poorly managed, you can find yourself in a position where you are working in multiple departments. You begin to have problems to estimate, which tasks are more important than others. Of course you can determine, what you want to do first, but one of your “bossess” will change your plans for sure. This can lead to a strong work overload and stress (or even depression).
3. Dollar-For-Hour is the only measure with which you quantify your work.
If you think how much money you should earn by single task – you think in terms of rat-racer. You are, in essence, saying that the money determines what you accomplish. It means more or less, that you don’t like your job but your like money. People who loves what they doing never think this way. They don’t even bother about dollar-per-hour. They feel valued and stay more productive, and greatest reward is the finishing, not the money. Quality means more than the money. Money comes after you are sattisfied with your work. Be the same – do your things and be happy all the time. Don’t spend too much time working for someone else’s goals.
4. You have too much work. It requires staying after hours.
Your list of tasks are endless and each one is time-consuming. Everyone wants you to finish all as fast as possible, so you stay late at work trying to finish your work. If you don’t complete, you will be in trouble next day. This problem occurs over and over.
5. You don’t hear any “Well done, good Job”.
You work your butt of to finish everything, but in the end of the day you hear only complains. This is really common. It can lead you to frustration. No one cares about you – you just a machine tribe. They only needs your work done no matter what you do and how you feel.
6. You discover that you have something more to do. You find out by accident.
You can be in a situation, where your bosses in the debate change their ideas and wants to make new project. Unfortunately you wouldn’t receive any information (“what for – you are just a worker” they can say). After some time when things starts to get urgent, someone tell you about the project you need to do. Belive me, it happens. You have little time – it implicates stress and sometimes is impossible to finish… But only you will be a victim.
7. If your boss tells you, that everyone can do your stuff.
When you hear the words that everyone can do your job, it means that your boss don’t respects your knowledge and experience. In my previous work as a graphic designer I have heard that all the time. Our president claimed, that the Graphic Department is nothing special, and that he can hire anyone without experience and knowledge and train him for graphic designer. Yeah, right 🙂 With this approach, it is not worth to work in such work… and the earnings were poor.
8. If you have ever said the words, “Yeah, but the pay is good.”
When you speak that words that means you don’t like your job but money is the factor to keep you still in the work you are in. This is a common phrase of rat-racer. You need to look at the deferred value: For example – if you make $100,000 a year and work 80 hours a week, and your friend make $50,000 a year and works 20 hours a week (4 times less), who makes more? You need to ask yourself what is more valuable for you – time or money. You need to design your lifestyle. If you work less you have time to achieve your goals (or find new one). When you work too much you won’t have time for yourself, family and friends. Your goals will be trown away. You will work for someone else, not for yourself. You can design your lifestyle. – not the money?
9. Your friends and family tells you that you’ve change because of the work.
If you don’t have time for normal life, you will hear this phrase over and over. What is the reason to complete work at home? If you prepare something for work at home, that means that work overcomes your life. This is a bad sign of being in rat race. Sure, we all need to speed up some task sometimes, but why in cost of your free time? The problem enlarges when you need to work at home everyday. When you think about your work at home it’s a bad sign also. Don’t let that happen to you.
10. If you feel as though what you do makes no difference.
When you are unhappy with your work, maybe it’s time to think about better alternative? If you are making things that makes you no difference, you don’t feel to be a part of the company. When you work for someone, you trade passion, life and energy. When the drive is gone, you will do no good. Feel free to do something else, you have lots of opportunities. Right now – in Internet era, you have multiple possibilities to make money and live better life. There are people out there who never work to someone else, but they are making millions. Please read biographies of famous millionaires and you find a way to turn your life around. I always like to read biographies or books about someone famous, because we can find very good advices there.
So how do you get out?
First thing you need to do is find a good alternative. Decission to quit job and stay unemployed is not a good option – especially when you have family. The best way is to BUILD PASSIVE INCOME after work and learn. You need to stay active. Going home and spend time watching TV cannot lead you nowhere. You can take another job, but you need to calculate – is it worthy. Money shouldn’t be the key factor. If you want to work for someone else find a place when you will grow (you can learn new things or gain experience). But please build passive income. This is the most important think when it comes to your finances. Life is about achieving goals – YOUR GOALS, not someone else’s. After finding or building good alternative don’t look back. I know it’s hard to quit a job, but we all have one life. We won’t be fulfilled when we work till retire – I can assure you that.
If you have a hobby you love, make it your business. If you have a dream, an aspiration, do you everything you can to make it happen and do not let others to keep you from achieving it.
I am in the position where I want to quit my job, but my “building passive income” process is not completed. I have severe good income services, but they can be treat like a job rather than business (not passive).I stay active and learn as much I can. I think I have had some good experience in stock market and real estate. I hope I can help you in some way and the article you red was a good inspiration for you. What do you thnk about the subject? Please feel free to leave comments 🙂
