TInternet is a great place to generate passive and active income. Nowadays everyone can be an Internet entrepreneur and earn money online. Some major advantages over offline businesses are: involving less money at start (especially in start ups), requirement for less fancy electronics and special workplace, possibility to create and expand online business every time and anywhere.
Please bear in mind, that effort = final / complete product matters now. No one will ask you, how much time you spent creating your online product. People want to be suprised and to have something useful in a blink of an eye. The idea is the first step. Very important is to get your product complete before others, or to create better product that exists right now. You will also need the knowledge / skills and / or people who can help you with marketing strategies.
People often think, that right now it’s difficult to create spectacular online ideas. There are dozens of creative people with free time and developing skills. You can think that making money online is harder than ever.. You are wrong.
Today’s the best time to start to make millions from online ideas. How to do it? It’s not simple but achievable.
It’s good to know some historical ideas that generates millions. Let’s look through the prism of time. Every year brings new opportunities, new technologies, new design trends and there is always a new approach for certain things. I will try to jump through different, amazing ideas from the history of Internet just to show, how much online ideas changes during these years. This knowledge can help you to apply your personal online income strategy.
I present you 10 ideas (categorized by date) that made millions of dollars easily.
1. New Marketing Idea. Million Dollar Homepage – 2005
Earning money by offering space on advertising page in completly different, more creative way.
For me, the site milliondollarhomepage.com was a milestone when it comes to earning money online. In 2005 banner ads were the most common advert types. Alex Tew – a guy from England presented the new way to advertise content for the companies. He came up with the idea of offering space on his page “The Million Dollar Home Page” in 2005. He creates the site built by a million of pixels. People and companies could buy one or more pixels for $1 each.
Because Alex create new advertising experience – people and companies bought all the pixels. The main difference from other advertising sites was offering space for just $1 per pixel (not entire space per certain amount of money). Tew was a millionaire about a year after first launching the site. Alex earns overall $1,037,100 in gross income. Please bear in mind that a typical monitor these days displays 800×600 or 1024×768 pixels. One pixels looks big in these resolutions. The site is still available for viewing, so please check it out.
Some people think that sites like milliondollarhomepage.com is a dumb and weird idea. In my opinion, Alex had nothing to lose, so his creative mind comes into play. This story tells us, that people, who thinks different finds new ways to recreate old ideas and turn them into something spectacular. A lot of people try to recreate the idea, but they never achieve success like Alex does. Innovation is the key for success.
Offering space on advertising page idea can still work, but the playground needs to change. Maybe nowadays it is a good idea to spare advertising space inside some sort of video game? For example: people can pay money while they inside of a game. After payment you – as a maker – can give them some sort of gift or painting in the wall? For sure no one try to create some sort of virtual wall offline (in real life).
2. A Social Media Nitche – Ashley Madison – 2005
Create a platform which helps everyone to chat and make relationships with other people – in a secure way. Choosing the right target audience and technology.
Another online dating service and social networking service. This dating site caters exclusively to people who are married or in committed relationships. The main difference is that the authors promotes cheating. He even uses a motto of, “Life is short, have an affair.”.
The authors was right about affairs and his profit was of over $50 million. Unfortunately, in july 2015 hackers leaked the names of 30 million people who had used Ashley Madison. It was a disaster. Resignations, divorces and suicides destroys this inspirational idea.
Ashley Madison is a perfect example, how to take idea and recreate it to receive good source of income. Major difference between normal dating sites and Ashley Madison was the target group. When you take a good idea and want to create something extraordinary – you need to expand that idea and do things better than your opponents.
In my opinion, Ashley Madison was a victim of his own success. All the data stored here was a big deal hackers. Hacking this site was just a matter of time. It’s hard to have good security over your sites these days, but when we have a big data located in one place, we need to think as a piority, how to secure them.
3. Social Media – Facebook – 2004
Create a social platform better than everything available right now.
Everyone knows what Facebook is. We – as a society, always needed social relationships. In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg finds his opportunity and creates “The Facebook”. The major advantage over another social sites were: good technology, security and new advantages, for example the “Like button”. This was a completely new experience for people who uses social media sites before. Facebook became popular, because it was a perfect product dedicated in a perfect time. Facebook account was easy to manage for everyone, and the site is always online. Still, Mark Zuckerberg raised over $200 billion in profits, making Facebook one of the most profitable sites today and making Zuckerberg the youngest billionaire in America. His IPO on stock market was a big opportunity for everyone.
Facebook is an example of a virtual product “everyone wants to buy”. There is no major real product Zuckerberg could sell, but the profit was generated by a virtual idea which help us join as a society.
Every year offers new opportunities. Social media sites was over Internet before. I remember the time when the most popular site was My Space. Mark Zuckerberg take the idea and create a new social media experience – for example added the “Like button”. Simplicity, idea and technology + software were the key factors. Facebook was a better version of all social media websites existed. Over the Web there is still enough space for new social sites like Facebook. Check how Instagram, Twitter, Digg and Snapchat are doing. They uses the same idea: create a system to exchange content with others. The major difference between all social media sites are the way of showing the content to others and a target group for that content. If you want to create brand new social media platform, you can do it. There is still enough room in virtual environment. You can try to create a platform for exchanging content with others in a fastest, simplest way. Your site needs to be better and/or offers some new features. As Dan Miller writes in his “48 Days To Creative Income” – this platform can be 10% better and still have a change to be the best.
4. A Video – sharing Website – Youtube – 2005
A platform to exchange rich content without boundries. Place to connect creativity and a forum for people to connect, inform, and inspire others across the globe.
Youtube was founded in 2005. The history of YouTube began when PayPal employees (Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim) created a video-sharing website where users could upload their content. The idea was nothing new in 2005, but the ability to upload every video for free turns to be a milestone. At first, Youtube was a site who earns no money. In November 2005, venture firm Sequoia Capital invested an initial $3.5 million additionally, In April 2006, Sequoia and Artis Capital Management invested an additional $8 million in the company, which had experienced hugely popular growth within its first few months. During the summer of 2006, YouTube was one of the fastest growing sites on the Web. In October 2009 Youtube was purchased by Google for $1.65 billion in stock.
Nowadays, everyone uses Youtube. YouTube provides a forum for people to connect, inform, and inspire others across the globe and acts as a distribution platform for original content creators and advertisers large and small. Youtube is still the most important video platform, because it is free and videos can be uploaded easily. I think right now you can’t create that big video site like Youtube, but you can use all site’s advantages. Youtube is a good way to create passive income – just upload amazing video and start to make money. You should definately try to do it!
5. A Platform to Exchange Content – Cheezburger – 2007
Create online system to exchange funny content with other people.
Cats and Internet? Why not. The idea behind icanhascheezburger.com was to show a picture of a cat with funny caption. This is a perfect example how funny idea can turn into million dollar website. Founders, Eric Nakagawa & Kari Unebasami started blog “I Can Has Cheezburger?” with a picture of a cat.
This site quickly became a highly trafficked area. It was a tremendous success. Inspired by a meowing cat, the site’s traffic was about 10 million views a month. This successful site was sold it to a group of investors for $2 million. Still, Icanhascheezburger now has nearly 100 million views a month, has spawned 6 blogs and is one of the most popular websites out there. It’s funny that the site is worth $80 million now. How is it possible?
The other site follows exact pattern (with success) is shoppingcartabuse.
This was indeed a social experiment. We can say that sites like this one was a precursors for sites like Hot or not and Snapchat. Which all raises one question. why it worked?
We all need to have something to relieve from stress. The best way is to see something stupid or funny. That’s why Icanhascheezburger became a huge success. Sites like that will still be highly trafficked. Even now, starting some stupid can generate solid income from advertisers or CPV (Cost per view). You can try it too.

For example: John Azzi and Eliot Arntz, earned over $1 million in 2014 for their course on iOS 8 app development and the new Swift programming language. Similarly, Rob Percival, a former high school math teacher from Cambridge, England, found similar success with his four courses on various programming topics. 8. App and Games Development – iFart App – 2008
Create an app / software for people to learn or have fun.
IFart is a really unappropriate, but extremely catchy app for the iPhone. Once downloaded, you have a pack of farting sounds. You can play them everywhere just to annoy or laugh about everybody.
This app is as simple as it gets. You just download the app, choose a fart sound, then push the red button and voila. Developed by Infomedia, it was number one on the app chart in the run up to Christmas 2008. The app and all the new fart voices are ready to download at ifartmobile. This app is still numer one fart app out there.
Apps are markets’ huge piece of cake. If you are a developer or you have a free time – I suggest you to learn how to create Android or iOS apps. Right now in App stores are millions of users. When you sell even a small crap for $1 to million people – you will be half a millionaire (the fees are close to 30% – 50%).
Apps are one of the best modern passive income generators right now. I personally have some apps I made myself in Google Play Store. Please check them out, if you have a smartwatch with Android Wear. By downloading my app you appreciate my hard work. Although creating apps is not easy, because you need to have serious background of programing skils in Java (Android) or C# (iOS). Right now all the big companies involved in gaming industry creates apps (look for example for Pokemon! Go).
9. Professional Freelancing – Freelancer.com – 2009
Create a place when companies could upload their freelancing work. Freelancers can reply to posts from companies and add their offer.
Because I was a freelancer i know that freelancer.com is a great way to make money. Nothing comes easly – the effort (not creation time) counts. If you are skilled designer or developer – freelancing jobs were made for you. You can find a lot of great jobs opportunities worldwide. You just need to sign to a platform and seek offers. When you gain experience and have a great portfolio – job opportunities comes easier.
Freelancing is more an active income idea. To make it passive – you can create a system of automation and seek for jobs exactly match with that system. For example company wants to start a social network fanpage. You can create a system of automation to create pages in all social media sites.
Another approact to freelancing is to start completly new site to provide offers for freelancing works. You can create a brand new platform (the hardest way), or create new site witch combines all the offers from sites like freelancer.com. Good example of that idea is Trivago (hotel offers in one place).
10. Crowdfunding – Kickstarter – 2009
Start a crowdfunding website. People are generous.
Crowdfunding was a perfect idea for everyone. Take a look at big data from Kickstarter, Since site’s launch, on April 28, 2009, 12 million people have backed a project, $2.8 billion has been pledged, and 117,916 projects have been successfully funded. Time magazine named it one of the “Best Inventions of 2010” and “Best Websites of 2011”. Just take a look at completed projects. This is indeed a great site to check new design trends and mind blowing ideas.
Crowdfunding is a perfect example how an idea could turn into money. If you want to start a project, and you don’t have enough funding to complete it, take a look at Kickstarter or Indiegogo. When you idea turns to be great, people can cheer you up with money to complete the project. If you have a good idea, take some time to create the best marketing offer for your idea and upload your project. Perfect ideas are worth millions worldwide.
Conclusion. How the web looked like before? How will it look like in the future?
Ok, we’ve checked great ideas from people who made millions online. You can ask yourself a question: can I do it too? The answer is of course – yes. You only need to know the fact, that in the Web are more than a billion of websites (internetlivestats.com). Many people try to get rich over Internet, so the competition is strong.
In my experience – creation and implementation process of online idea is not complicated. You just need a perfect idea to take some serious amount of time (or have a well-organized team) to accomplish your goal. Time is the most crutial factor. People often gave up after couple of months trying. Because the competition is big – you need to think and act big and take yourself some time to expand and grow yourself and your business ideas.
I remember those times, when the bandwidth was extremely slow and I needed to create websites and advertising sticking with the limit of size. There were not enough space for creativity, but limits helps to create more optimized stuff. Right now there is a slightly difference. Today not the optimization counts, but the contents. In my opinion this is a good change.
Look at technology. Couple of years back we were creating pages based on html+css. Right now we use frameworks and advanced scripts, that are already made and works amazingly well. We just need to use it. Web Design changes too. Right now UX persons are the ones who earns big money. Even internet evolves from web 2.0 to a almost a semantic web where information is the main factor.
Right now everyone can check and review almost every part of any webpage and comment it with friends. I remember 10 years ago the key for success online were: idea + creativity, webmaster skills, Myspace or forums, Couple of years earlier the magic triangle was Facebook, blogs, e-books. Right now rich-contents matters. The key for success is a perfect triangle: Snapchat, Instagram, vlog (Youtube). My predictions for next years will be: 3D printing, augmented reality, internet of things, live vlogs or podcasts, and crazy socializing ideas. Maybe sites like Twitter, Facebook will evolve to something new? Time will tell.
You see that everything changes. To be a man of success you need to do one from both things.
1. Leave behind old and present ideas and create something brand new.
2. Stick to the existing technology and community, but do things better than everyone else.
Now is the right time. There is still plenty of room for inventions. The sad part is that to be the at the top you need to invest a lot of time and / or money for advertising and optimization. When you are sleeping or you are lazy – someone else is trying to have your piece of cake. Maybe you are a master of electronics and technology and you will be able to create something brand now – like the idea of 7D projecting. Just take a look how a new idea can turn into something extraordinary:
